Write a One-Sentence Problem Statement
Use this format:
[Target customer] struggles with [specific problem] because [root cause], and it costs them [measurable impact].

If you cannot write this sentence clearly, the idea is still too vague to validate. You may be in exploration mode, which is fine. But do not mistake exploration for evidence.
Define the Customer Segment Tightly
“Everyone” is not a customer segment. Neither is “small businesses” or “busy professionals.”
Define your first segment by:
- Role: What job title, function, or decision-maker owns the problem?
- Context: What company size, industry, life stage, or operating environment makes the problem visible?

Look for unsolicited pain signals in:
- Reddit threads and niche communities
- LinkedIn and X posts from your target audience
- Industry forums, Slack groups, Discords, and newsletters
- Product reviews for direct and indirect competitors
- Search queries and autocomplete patterns
- Support forums for existing tools
You are looking for repeated language: the same complaint, the same workaround, the same frustration, the same buying trigger. If nobody talks about the problem when you are not prompting them, demand may be harder to create.
Use AI to Compress Research, Not Replace Judgment
AI can help summarize interview transcripts, cluster pain points, scan reviews, identify repeated phrases, and compare competitor positioning. That makes validation faster.
But AI does not decide whether the idea is good. Founders still need judgment. AI can process the evidence. It cannot supply the market’s willingness to act.

Step 3: Size the Opportunity
Once the problem appears real, check whether it can support the kind of business you want to build.
Use Bottom-Up Market Sizing
Top-down market sizing usually sounds impressive and teaches very little. “This is a $10B market” does not tell you whether your segment is reachable, urgent, or willing to pay.
Use bottom-up sizing instead:
- How many target customers have this problem?
- How many can you realistically reach in the first 12-24 months?
- What price would the segment plausibly pay?
- How often would they pay?
- What acquisition channel can reach them repeatedly?
